AMBOY, San Bernardino County — October 27, 2026. The future of historic Route 66 through Amboy depends in part on the condition of small desert bridges. San Bernardino County’s 2025–26 capital improvement program lists a project to replace three National Trails Highway bridges in Amboy, with $8,606,000 in total estimated project costs.
The budget lists the three-bridge project as in design, with $1,609,700 in recommended requirements for the 2025–26 fiscal year. It identifies discretionary county funds, the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority and state funding as sources. These figures are capital-plan estimates, not proof that the bridges are already replaced or that all money has been spent.
Why bridge reliability matters
National Trails Highway carries visitors to Route 66 landmarks and connects isolated Mojave Desert communities. Damage from past floods has resulted in detours, weight restrictions and repeated repair programs. County Public Works cautions that the status of individual highway segments can change.
Before traveling, consult the county’s National Trails Highway closure guidance and Route 66 bridge updates. Do not assume a capital-budget entry means the road is open end to end.
